Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Purim

VANCOUVER – Liberal Party of Canada Leader, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Purim:

“Today, members of the Jewish community in Canada and around the world will gather with loved ones in celebration of Purim. This joyous occasion, which recounts the story of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordecai, who saved the Jews of ancient Persia, will be marked by the exchanging of gifts, giving to charity, and feasting on Hamantaschen.

“Purim reminds us of the strength of the Jewish people, and their survival in the face of persecution. As we read the Megillah, we reaffirm our individual and collective responsibility to speak out against acts of anti-Semitism, and other expressions of intolerance or hatred, wherever they occur.

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our entire Parliamentary Caucus, Sophie and I wish members of the Jewish community Chag Purim Sameach.”
