Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on the International Day of La Francophonie
March 20, 2015
TORONTO — Liberal Party of Canada Leader, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the International Day of La Francophonie:
“Today we celebrate the International Day of La Francophonie. It is an opportunity to showcase the millions of Francophones living in communities across Canada.
“Francophones around the world come to Canada to benefit from, and contribute to, our rich cultural and linguistic diversity. For centuries, French-speaking Canadians have added to the strength and prosperity of our country, and they continue to be vital to our success.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I would like to extend my best wishes to all Francophones, both here at home and around the world, who are celebrating the International Day of La Francophonie.”
Liberal Foreign Affairs and La Francophonie Critic, Marc Garneau, continued:
“This year we also celebrate the fact that the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean was elected Secretary General of La Francophonie. Under her leadership, the organization and the French language will be promoted around the world.
“In Canada, let us make the same commitment as Ms. Jean to encourage the proud tradition of the French language and to pass it on to future generations.”
