September 5, 2021
Ottawa, Ontario – Today, the Leader of the Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement on the closing of the Tokyo Paralympic Games:
“Over the past two weeks, Canada’s best Paralympians went for the gold, and showed the world what it means to be Canadian. I want to sincerely congratulate all of our athletes on their incredible achievements over the past twelve days, including the 21 medals they fought hard for, and thank them all for their perseverance and resilience, especially over the course of the past year and a half.
“The victory of these Paralympians is a victory for all Canadians — for close friends, family, and their communities, to all those who watched from home. This has been a much-needed moment of celebration for our country. From Aurélie Rivard bringing home five swimming medals to Brent Lakatos establishing himself as one of the world’s fastest wheelchair racers, this was an incredible year for Canada’s top athletes.
“Today, as we watched the maple leaf flag fly at the closing ceremony, we were all given a moment of pride and reflection on what we can achieve with hard work and perseverance.
“Once again, congratulations to Team Canada. You have made us all so proud.”
