Statement by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau on Memorial Day
July 1, 2013
TORONTO– Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau made the following statement today on Memorial Day:
“Today we commemorate the brave men and women of Newfoundland and Labrador who serve in uniform, and particularly those who gave their lives during the First World War.
It was on July 1, 1916 – the first day of the Battle of the Somme – that the Royal Newfoundland Regiment advanced into open ground at Beaumont-Hamel. The results were devastating. The regiment suffered unimaginable losses, touching every family back home.
As people gather today at Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in France, we join in remembering the loss of those brave Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who courageously took up arms.
On this Memorial Day, 97 years since the Battle of the Somme, I would like to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed so greatly. Let us join in renewing our commitment to support all serving members and veterans, and never forget their service.”
