Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on the Anniversary of Canada’s First Official Visit to China
October 10, 2013
BRANDON, MB– The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement today on the 40th anniversary of the first visit by a Canadian Prime Minister to the People’s Republic of China:
“Today, we are observing 40 years since the first official visit was undertaken by a Canadian Prime Minister to China. The Canadian delegation met with the Premier and Chairman, an historic event that has translated into the strong bilateral relations our two countries now enjoy.
This 1973 meeting between our heads of government was a significant event, and it followed the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and China in 1970. The economic, social and cultural relationship we benefit from today would never have been possible without this important outreach four decades ago.
Liberals have long advanced Canada’s foreign relations and continue to prioritize the strengthening of partnerships with nations across the globe, particularly as this is essential to building a strong economy that supports middle class Canadian families.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I join with all those marking this notable anniversary and Canada’s key relationship with the People’s Republic of China.”
