Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on the Death of John Matheson
December 30, 2013
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement on the death of former Liberal Member of Parliament, John Matheson:
“I was very saddened to learn John Matheson has died. His lifelong commitment to Canada was unmatched, having served with distinction as a lawyer, judge, and in the House of Commons.
“When I last saw John in Kingston this year, I was reminded of his incredible impact on the shaping of our country. While he served valiantly in the military during the Second World War, John will best be recognised by many Canadians for his leadership in the creation of both our national flag and the Order of Canada. It is fitting that these two, unifying symbols of national pride will live on as testaments of John’s passion for his country.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, Sophie and I extend our sincere condolences to John’s family at this very sad time.”
