Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Persons Day
October 18, 2014
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Persons Day:
“Today, we recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of five Canadian women who will forever be remembered as pioneers.”
“The Famous Five brought their case all the way to the highest court, where it was ruled on this day in 1929 that women were, in fact, ‘persons’ under the law. This victory allowed for the appointment of the first woman to the Senate, and it has paved the way for the expansion of women’s rights in Canada.”
“While our progress is worthy of recognition, we must also acknowledge that there is still work to be done. Too many women face unacceptable discrimination in pay equity, barriers to employment, and domestic violence. Liberals will continue to stand for action, and we will always advocate for women’s full economic, social, reproductive, and political equality.”
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our entire Liberal Caucus, I encourage all Canadians to take this day to reflect on the important contribution of the Famous Five and the advancement of women’s rights in Canada.”
