Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Ukraine’s Independence Day
August 24, 2014
FREDERICTON – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Ukraine’s Independence Day:
“Today, I join with members of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus in marking the Independence Day of Ukraine. I am very pleased to send my heartfelt good wishes to the people of Ukraine and Ukrainian-Canadians celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Ukrainian independence.
“On this occasion, we commemorate the many who for decades fought for freedom and democracy in Ukraine, culminating in independence 23 years ago. These values were defended this year on the Maidan, and this struggle continues in the face of Russian aggression. It is because of our close ties that Canadians and the Liberal Party of Canada stand united with the people of Ukraine during this current crisis.
“I congratulate the people of Ukraine and their government for the important democratic and economic reforms which they have launched that will produce fertile ground for future prosperity. Canada can and must play an important role in supporting Ukraine’s reforms.
“Canada must also continue to work with our allies to apply increased political and economic pressure on Russia to end its interference in Ukrainian affairs.”
