Statement on the NDP leadership vote

TORONTO, ON – The following statement on today’s NDP leadership vote was issued by Azam Ishmael, National Director for the Liberal Party of Canada:

“Liberals across Canada offer our congratulations to Jagmeet Singh on his election as Leader of the New Democratic Party. The Liberal team looks forward to a constructive debate on how we can continue to strengthen Canada’s middle class.

“Justin Trudeau’s positive plan for real change is making a real difference in the lives of Canadian families. Our first step in government was to raise taxes on the wealthiest one percent, so we could lower taxes for the middle class. The Liberal government also stopped sending childcare cheques to millionaires so the new Canada Child Benefit could provide more money to 9 out of 10 families.

“We’re also taking action to strengthen the Canada Pension Plan, create new affordable childcare spaces, improve the quality of homecare for seniors, and build more affordable housing.

“The Liberal team will stay focused on building a stronger middle class and a better future for all Canadians, not just the wealthiest one percent. We look forward to working together with the NDP on this shared goal.”
