The Conservatives’ latest cuts: 10,000 teachers in Ontario
September 28, 2019
Mississauga, ON – Conservatives say they’re ‘for the people,’ but then they cut taxes for the wealthy and make cuts that affect everyone else. In the latest case, 10,000 teachers are being forced out in Ontario, affecting hundreds of thousands of kids.
“Andrew Scheer said Doug Ford was the best choice for Premier of Ontario. Fast forward to now and Doug Ford has recklessly cut services and programs that Ontarians rely on,” said Mississauga–Malton Liberal candidate Navdeep Bains. “Ford is slashing education, health, environmental programs, and even libraries. How can Andrew Scheer accept that’s the best outcome for kids in Ontario?”
Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office (FAO) forecast this week that, with Doug Ford’s current cuts to education, there will be 9,060 fewer high school teachers and 994 fewer elementary teachers in Ontario. These Conservative cuts come in the wake of a long list of cuts to universities, colleges, and student support programs, making it harder for most people to access post secondary education.
“Our future prosperity depends on quality education and care for all of our children. The Conservatives’ plan includes reckless cuts that would cripple our economy and put our kids at risk. They have no plan for the future of this country,” said Bains.
